Harper's Magazine Internship
In Fall of 2021, I had the incredible opportunity to be the Art Direction Intern at Harper's Magazine in New York City.
During this internship, I conducted extensive art research compiling lists of about 30 to 40 new artists and exhibitions occurring that month which were then reviewed by the Art Director and Deputy Art Director to determine which would then be used in the issue. The work I researched was used in the Readings and New Books section of the magazine. My work also included requesting rights and permissions from acquired works as well as reviewing electronic layouts and color matching images for final print.
Along with art research, I was in charge of selecting an artwork from the extensive archives spanning 171 years to be paired with a selected article from the archive highlighting a piece from the past that was relevant to the current issue.
I designed the monthly puzzle based on the questions and answers previously created. Using a template, I made sure rows and columns were altered to fit the correct number of letters as well as making sure numbers corresponded to spaces. I also filled in the previous issues puzzle with the correct answers so that readers could check their answers.
Towards the end of the internship I was tasked with partnering with the Production Manager and Web Developer to redesign the weekly newsletter. Using Constant Contact, I created multiple templates and versions of potential layouts until reaching a final product approved by the Production Manager. This redesign has since been implemented since my departure.
